ZEROe: Airbus Future of Hydrogen-Powered Aviation

    • Range: Over 2,000 nautical miles
    • Features: This design features a modified gas-turbine engine running on hydrogen, stored in tanks located behind the rear pressure bulkhead. It is ideal for long-haul flights.
  2. Turboprop Design

    • Capacity: Up to 100 passengers
    • Range: Over 1,000 nautical miles
    • Features: This concept uses propellers powered by hydrogen combustion in modified gas-turbine engines. It is designed for short-haul routes, offering a balance of efficiency and reduced emissions.
  3. Blended-Wing Body (BWB) Design

    • Capacity: Up to 200 passengers
    • Range: Similar to the turbofan concept
    • Features: The most futuristic of the three, this design integrates the wings with the main body of the aircraft, providing a highly aerodynamic shape. The BWB design offers more extensive storage for hydrogen fuel and opens up new possibilities for cabin design.

Hydrogen Infrastructure and Challenges

One of the significant challenges in making hydrogen-powered aviation a reality is the development of the necessary infrastructure for hydrogen production, storage, and refueling. Airbus is working closely with airports, energy providers, and governments to create a robust hydrogen ecosystem. This involves setting up hydrogen production facilities, developing storage solutions, and ensuring that airports are equipped to handle hydrogen refueling.
